We’ll Spend $6,000 On A Bike — But Hesitate To Spend $250 On The Skills That Unlock It

I have a confession.

And it comes from years of lovingly observing mountain bikers in their natural habitat.

It usually starts innocently…

We decide we might get into biking.

A friend says, “You need a new bike.”

We open 12 tabs comparing geometry charts.

We read bike reviews like we’re studying for finals.

We spec colors like we’re designing a sports car.

Then one day…

✨ she arrives ✨

The shiny new bike.

We name her.

We photograph her from every angle.

We text our friends: “NBD.”

And for a moment?

Pure dopamine. Absolute magic.

But then we ride it…

…and the corner still feels spicy.

The descent still feels a bit wobbly.

The brain quietly goes:

“Huh. Interesting.”

The Part We Don’t Talk About (But All Recognize)

Here’s the pattern I see over and over — and yes, I’m guilty too.

We’ll invest thousands in the bike…

but hesitate to invest hundreds in the thing

that actually changes how riding feels.

Not because we don’t care.

Not because we’re lazy.

Because we’re human.

Our brains are wired for the shiny upgrade.

The quick hit.

The immediate excitement.

And skills?

Building them takes deliberate practice.

Requires playful persistence. Acknowledging gaps in your riding.

Finding joy in the pursuit of progress.

But this is where everything changes!

The Investment Paradox

Let’s look at the totally unscientific but emotionally accurate math:

The Bike:

💸 $3,000 – $8,000+

The Skills That Unlock It:

• Private Lesson → $250

• 4-Week Series → $440

• Weekend Camp → $550

In other words…

For the price of a tire upgrade,

you could fundamentally change how your rides feel forever.

Why This Matters

Skills aren’t just about riding “better.”

They’re about how riding feels.

When your skills grow:

You relax more

You become the boss of your bike

You have more fun You motivation exponentially increases

You ride more often

You start seeing fun lines instead of obstacles.

And suddenly the bike you already own

feels like a completely new machine.

A Quick Self-Check (Be Honest 😄)

Which one(s) have you spent more time on this season?

⬜ Researching bike gear

⬜ Watching bike videos

⬜ Talking about riding ⬜ Planning a bike adventure

⬜ Shopping for new bike apparel

⬜ Practicing bike skills

(No judgment — just awareness.)

The Reframe

Your bike is the hardware.

Skills are the software.

And software updates?

That’s where the magic lives.

Because confidence isn’t something you buy.

It’s something you build.

And once it clicks — everything gets more fun (and isn't that the point?)

The Ripple Effect of Skills

When you invest in your bike skills, you don’t just improve — you transform your relationship with the sport.

✨ More confidence

✨ More fun

✨ More freedom

✨ Fewer “I almost died” stories

✨ More longevity in the sport

And maybe most importantly…

More joy.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve already invested in the bike,

you deserve to feel (more) amazing riding it.

Not tense.

Not hesitant.

Not wondering if you’re “doing it right.”

You deserve to feel:

✔️ capable

✔️ playful

✔️ confident

✔️ excited to ride
